We welcome enquires from researchers interested in applying for a fellowship hosted in the CEC
The majority of faculty in the CEC established themselves as independent researchers by securing fellowships. We also currently host a diverse range of early and mid-career fellows funded by both UK and international schemes, e.g. UKRI Future Leaders Fellows, NERC Independent Research Fellows, BBSRC Fellows, Royal Society University Research Fellows, Marie Curie Fellows, European Research Council and Wellcome schemes (see quotes below from two of our fellows).
This critical mass and experience makes us exceptionally well placed to support prospective fellows both pre- and post-award.
Support pre-award:
- Advice on scheme suitability and proposal writing from our experienced academics, network of successful fellows and research development staff.
- Peer review of draft proposals.
- Support with costing and submission of applications via funder portals.
- Assistance with interview preparation.
Support post-award:
- 1:1 mentoring from experienced colleagues.
- Peer support and integration within our Early Career Research Network.
- Opportunities (but no obligation) to gain teaching experience and to supervise BSc, MSc, MRes, and co-supervise PhD project students.
- Training and personal development.
- Support for grant proposal development from experienced colleagues and research support staff.
Fellowship applicants interested in joining us should contact our directors of research and/or a member of faculty closest to their research area in the first instance to discuss their proposed project.
"I am a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow based in the Environment & Sustainability Institute working on the ecological and evolutionary drivers underpinning microbial cooperation and exploitation. While applying for fellowships I received extensive support from both faculty and the research development team in the CEC. This included help and advice on developing my proposal, peer review, support with costings and applications. I especially valued the interview training I received and generous support of faculty with mock interviews."
Dr Elze Hesse
Senior Research Fellow
"I am a Wellcome Trust Early Career Award fellow based in the CEC studying host-pathogen interactions and the evolution of host immune systems. The support I received from the university staff and the Research Development team in the CEC was excellent. The faculty was highly supportive in helping me prepare my Welcome application. Being at UoE has also ensured I am equipped with the support, tools and facilities needed to deliver my ambitious research programme."
Dr Mark Hanson
Research Fellow
