Seminar Series

The Centre for Ecology and Conservation runs a weekly seminar series where we invite world leading researchers to present and discuss their latest research. The seminars run Thursdays 1-2pm on the Penryn Campus (in person only) with opportunities for staff and students to talk to the speaker about their work.

Darwin Landing Day Seminar

In addition to our regular Thursday seminars we also run a special “Darwin Landing Day seminar" to celebrate the day Darwin came ashore in Falmouth at the end of his voyage on the Beagle on the 2nd October 1836. Each year we invite a distinguished researcher in Evolutionary Biology.

CEC Christmas Conservation seminar

We also host a special "CEC Christmas Conservation seminar”, inviting a leading conservation scientist to talk about their work.
Find out more about our exciting schedule of talks via the link below, where you can also find out about other events happening in the department.

Festival of Science 2026

We welcomed more than 150 children from local primary schools to our annual Festival of Science on 12 June 2026. The event showcased a wide range of engaging, hands-on activities delivered by colleagues from across all departments on campus, inspiring young minds and bringing science to life.

The children and their teachers were full of enthusiasm and praise for the event, reflecting the excitement and curiosity generated throughout the day. The Festival of Science highlights the very best of our campus, strengthening our connections with local schools and communities while providing valuable opportunities for young people to explore the world of science. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to making the event such a resounding success.

Darwin Week 2026

Darwin Week 2026 celebrated Charles Darwin's legacy and modern evolutionary research through a series of lectures, workshops and social events held from 10-13 February 2026.

Participants heard from visiting researchers Matteo Santon (University of Padova) and Andrew Hendry (McGill University), who delivered talks on cuttlefish behaviour and the role of evolution in shaping the natural world.

The programme also included a PhD round-table statistics workshop, a session on promoting research through visual media, speaker dinners with both guests, and a campus-wide treasure hunt. The week provided valuable opportunities for staff and students to engage with leading researchers, develop new skills, and celebrate the diversity of evolutionary science.
