Overview

I am a post-doctoral research associate in evolutionary dynamics and social evolution in the Currie lab at Exeter University.

My research interests lie in the evolution of social behaviour (cooperation, coordination) and social organization (hierarchy, institutions). I focus on the transition of human groups from small groups of kin-related individuals to large societies of unrelated individuals. For instance, my PhD investigated the emergence of hierarchy, and proposed that hierarchy arose because it allows groups to coordinate at a larger scale. My current projects investigate (i) the emergence of state in Japan and (ii) the interactions between hierarchy and institutions.

I study these topics using evolutionary models, such as evolutionary game theoretical models and agent-based simulations.
