Zoe Turner

Postgraduate Researcher
Ecology and Conservation

Zoe is a PhD student at the University of Exeter (Penryn), as part of Prof. Michael Cant and Dr. Faye Thompson's research project, INTERGROUP. As part of this project, Zoe is investigating the evolution of conflict in the cooperative social system of banded mongooses (Mungos mungo). Incorporating drone imagery, machine learning, and theoretical models, she aims to improve our understanding of why conflict is present in cooperative societies by evaluating the drivers and consequences of such conflict, and exploring the individual roles present during conflict.

Previously, Zoe has worked with the Kalahari Meerkat Project (in collaboration with the University of Zurich and University of Cambridge). During her time as a research assistant and project manager, Zoe has been involved in all aspects of behavioural observations, bioacoustic data collection, data organisation, database and project management, and supervision of students. Furthermore, she has collaborated on studies exploring foraging development, social ontogeny, and gestational weight gain.

Zoe's previous and current work complements her wider research interests within behavioural ecology, and in particular the study of sociality and developing interdisciplinary approaches to tackling research questions.
