Professor Kevin J. Gaston is a distinguished Professor of Biodiversity and Conservation at the University of Exeter. He leads basic, strategic, and applied research in ecology and conservation biology, with a current focus on common ecology, nighttime ecology, and personalised ecology. He was the founding Director of the Environment and Sustainability Institute from 2010 to 2017.

 

With a strong track record of interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder working, Professor Gaston is a highly cited researcher, recognised by the ISI Web of Knowledge from 2003 to the present. His academic output includes nine monographs, and more than 600 papers, including in leading journals such as Current Biology, Nature, Nature Communications, Nature Ecology and Evolution, Nature Plants, Nature Sustainability, PLoS Biology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, Science, and Science Advances. Additionally, he has edited five volumes, contributed more than 40 chapters to edited volumes, and authored over 70 short papers, abstracts, and letters, alongside book reviews.

 

A successful leader of research groups and major projects, Professor Gaston has secured a large numbers of funding awards as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator, with a total funding value of approximately £50 million.
