Dr April Hayes

I am a microbiologist interested in the drivers and dynamics of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in microbial communities. I am particularly interested in the environments and contexts that promote selection, maintenance and spread of AMR.

I work with Dr Xav Harrison and Prof Stu Bearhop at the CEC to understand how environmental factors and social networks affect AMR in migratory geese. 

I previously worked with Dr Aimee Murray in the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH) where we were interested in understanding how AMR is selected for within environmental microbiomes (particularly sewage). I also did my PhD at the ECEHH where I identified how three non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals altered microbial commnity composition and AMR. 

I co-founded and co-run the Penryn Microbiology Early Career Network (ECRN). We hold a fortnightly seminar series for all microbiologists on the Penryn campus, where ECRs (including PGRs) are invited to share their research, and gain valuable insights and support from the rest of the microbiology society here at Penryn.
