Overview

I am a wildlife biologist working at the interface between ecology and epidemiology. In my role as a scientist for the Animal and Plant Health Agency I work mainly on the ecology and management of diseases in wildlife, particularly bovine tuberculosis (TB). I manage research and oversee the fieldwork associated with a long-term capture-mark-recapture study of badgers at Woodchester Park, Gloucestershire. The project is a strategically important resource and has provided many insights into the epidemiology and management of TB in badgers and cattle. 

In my role as an APHA scientist I am involved in providing advice to Government and other stakeholders. I work closely with academic colleagues in the Centre for Ecology & Conservation and the Environment and Sustainability Institute. 

Research supervision

I co-supervise PhD researchers working on a variety of topics related to mammal ecology, and the epidemiology and management of wildlife diseases. Recent projects have investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of TB transmission, senescence and immuno-competence and genetic correlates of TB infection in badgers, contact chains and disease risks in cattle, and the implications of contact networks for disease management in wild geese.
